Language Courses

All Western Armenian language courses fulfill the language requirement for the major and minor in the Department of African, Middle Eastern and South Asian and Languages and Literatures (AMESALL).

Elementary Western Armenian I (01:078:115)

Offered online over Zoom in the fall semester

This course is the first in a two-semester sequence that will introduce you to the basics of reading, writing, speaking and understanding Western Armenian, a diasporic language used by descendants of Armenians who once lived in the Ottoman Empire. Each week, you will be introduced to authentic examples of cultural production by Armenians (music, literature, film, visual art, etc.) from a new corner of the Armenian diaspora. By the end of the semester, you will be able to read and write in the Armenian alphabet; will be able to use all basic verb tenses; and will have begun to develop a vocabulary set that is both general and geared toward your own individual interests. Additionally, through homework assignments, guest speakers and discussions over the course of the semester, you will gain a deeper understanding of the multifaceted histories and cultures of Armenians around the world.

There is no prerequisite for Elementary Western Armenian I
